The Institute recently partnered with the National Park Service (NPS) to develop the Healthy and Sustainable Food Program, promoting healthy food choices and sustainability practices in parks across America. This program is part of a larger Healthy Parks Healthy People US initiative to strengthen connections among parks, human health, and the health of our environment.
In 2013, the Institute’s food program attained a major milestone by co-designing new healthy food standards and sustainability guidelines, which inspired new national food policy. Parks are now pioneering innovative, healthy, and sustainable food practices in over 250 food and beverage operations across the country—improving more than 23.5 million meals annually. This new food policy was a direct result of a collaborative effort including the Institute, National Park Service, concession companies, food industry experts, and government leaders.
